Information about the breast reduction procedure (Breast Lift)
There can be many reasons for a breast reduction surgery, some of the most common reasons are:
• the breasts are large and flaccid that can cause general health issues like posture problems, back pain etc.
• After pregnancy and breast feeding or as a result of considerable weight loss the breasts and the skin become floppy.
• The two breasts differ in shape or size.
All these three changes can cause serious psychic problems.
Breast Reduction procedure is performed under general anesthesia. The goal is to correct the shape, size and position of the breasts. In case the two breasts are different in size, making the larger breast smaller, or the enlargement of the smaller breast may be the necessary procedure.
The correct shape and position of the breast can be achieved most of the time by removing the flaccid excess skin and fixing the glandular tissue in a natural position. After the surgery, a horizontal scar will remain on the lower side of the breast and a a vertical scar starting from the gland. The lower horizontal scar is usually small and not visible. Drain is usually used for a few days.
Patient should stay in bed on the day of the surgery. From the next day patient can get up and gradually move, bending still not recommended, can leave the clinic usually in 1-2 days. It is necessary to wear a flexible bandage for a few days. Later it can be replaced by wearing a suspension bra for about a month. After the observation period the patient can go home with a companion. Arranging home care, and comply with the instructions is the patient's responsibility. Patients are being controlled periodically after the operation.
Rare but possible complications
Any surgical procedure may have complications or side effects like: bleeding or edema, however as the medical technics are becoming more and more advanced these are rare and if they occur they can be treated accordingly. In a few case side affects of the anesthesia may occur, patients with tendency may experience keloid scars.
On teh first week patients may esperience local pain whick van be traeted by painkillers like ( Algopyrin, Donalgin, Cataflam). Staying in hospital is usualy not more that 1-2 days, full recovery expected in 4-6 weeks. The final shape will form only months after the operation. Scars will first be red the continually become plae, this takes about a year. Patients may experince temporary sensitivity loss, arond the breast and nipples, or feel tension at period.
It is important to note, that after the years the the "lifted" breast can become flaccid and a patient may need further surgery.
